Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in the Construction Industry

Each year from September 15 through October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month provides an opportunity to recognize the history, culture, achievements, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. For those of us in the construction industry, it is also an opportunity to recognize the men and women whose skill, determination, leadership, and craftsmanship have helped build the communities where we live and work.

At CrossRoads Paving Solutions, we know that construction is about much more than materials and equipment. It is about people—the individuals who bring their experience, ideas, craftsmanship, and pride to every project. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we are highlighting one construction professional whose career embodies that spirit: civil engineer and entrepreneur Guiomar Obregon.

Paving the Way: Guiomar Obregon

Guiomar Obregon is the CEO and co-owner of Precision 2000, an Atlanta-based civil infrastructure engineering and construction firm she founded with her husband, Carlos Sanchez. Raised in Colombia, Obregon earned her bachelor's degree in civil engineering there before returning to the United States, where she pursued a master's degree in engineering and an MBA at Georgia Tech.

Construction and engineering were part of her life from an early age. Both of Obregon's parents were civil engineers, helping introduce her to a profession that would eventually become her own life's work. Her career is especially meaningful because it demonstrates the many opportunities available within the construction industry. From engineering and project management to entrepreneurship and executive leadership, construction offers career paths that extend far beyond the jobsite.

Under Obregon's leadership, Precision 2000 has worked in civil infrastructure and served federal and local government clients. Her contributions have extended beyond her own company as well. She has served on the board of directors of the Georgia Hispanic Construction Association, including service as chairwoman, and has been recognized by the organization with honors including its Leadership Award and Hispanic Entrepreneur of the Year distinction.

Building Opportunities for the Next Generation

Perhaps one of the most inspiring aspects of Obregon's story is her commitment to helping others enter and succeed in engineering and construction. Precision 2000 has supported scholarships that provide engineering students from universities in Colombia opportunities to study at Georgia Tech. Obregon has also emphasized the importance of encouraging more young Hispanics to consider careers in construction and engineering.

That commitment reflects an important truth about our industry: when we invest in people, we invest in the future of construction. The knowledge passed from one generation of builders, engineers, tradespeople, supervisors, and business owners to the next strengthens the entire industry.

Hispanic Contributions to Construction

The influence of Hispanic professionals can be seen throughout America's construction industry—from the skilled trades and field operations to engineering, architecture, project management, estimating, business ownership, and executive leadership. These contributions are particularly visible in communities like those throughout Florida, where Hispanic professionals play an important role in building the homes, roadways, commercial properties, public spaces, and infrastructure that support our growing communities. Hispanic Heritage Month gives our industry an opportunity not only to celebrate that contribution, but also to recognize the value of creating pathways for future generations to build rewarding careers in construction.

Building More Than Projects

At CrossRoads Paving Solutions, our work may begin with pavers, base materials, equipment, and careful planning, but what we ultimately build goes beyond driveways, patios, pool decks, walkways, and roadways. We build places where families gather, businesses welcome customers, neighborhoods grow, and communities connect.

The story of leaders such as Guiomar Obregon reminds us that construction itself can also create something powerful: opportunity. This Hispanic Heritage Month, CrossRoads Paving Solutions proudly recognizes the Hispanic and Latino professionals, craftspeople, entrepreneurs, engineers, and construction workers whose dedication continues to leave a lasting mark on our industry and our communities.
